Julie Hutton, Hutton Life Coaching, life coach in Matthews and Charlotte, NC

Our very first Faces & Places feature is Julie Hutton of Hutton Life Coaching, a woman who empowers women and a familiar face on the shelf at Crystal Crosby – The Hair Lair. If you’re new to Charlotte and starting a new chapter, Julie is someone you’ll be glad to know.

Moving to a new city brings up a lot more than logistics. What do you see people struggle with most during a big life transition?

Often, it’s losing the familiar things that helped you feel like yourself: your people, your routines, even knowing where to go for a good haircut. You can be excited about the move and still miss the life you left behind. That mix can be confusing, especially when you think you “should” be happy. I help people make room for both feelings and figure out what they need now.

Loneliness is one of the hardest parts of starting over. What’s your advice for someone who doesn’t know anyone in Charlotte yet?

Aim for familiar faces before close friendships. Choose something you genuinely enjoy, like a walking group, a class, or volunteering, and go back regularly so you’re not starting from scratch every time. You don’t have to be outgoing or instantly find “your people”; a simple “I’m new here. How did you get involved?” can open a conversation. And you can reach out to old friends while you build new connections.

What does working with you look like, and who do you help the most?

Working with me is a conversation where you don’t have to have everything figured out or put on a brave face. We explore what you want, what’s getting in the way, and why one part of you might want change while another feels hesitant. I work especially well with people who feel stuck, overwhelmed, burned out, or unsure of themselves, even when life looks fine from the outside. We meet in person in Matthews or online, and work toward clearer choices and manageable next steps.

What’s one piece of advice you’d give someone in their first 90 days in Charlotte?

Give yourself permission to explore before deciding what your new life should look like. Try a different Charlotte neighborhood, find a favorite spot close to home, and choose one activity you can return to each week. Notice what you actually enjoy, not just what you think you should be doing. The first 90 days can be about getting acquainted, not getting everything right.

If someone reading this feels stuck or overwhelmed right now, what’s one small step they could take today?

Take five quiet minutes and finish these two sentences: “I’d like more of…” and “I’d like less of….” Pick one answer and ask yourself what would make a small difference today, not fix everything, just make things a little easier. Awareness creates clarity. If you’d like someone to help you sort through what comes up, I offer a free Discovery Session, a chance to talk and see whether working together feels right.

And if you’re still looking for your first friendly face in Charlotte, I’d be happy to be one.
